England bids for 2018 or 2022 World Cup

LONDON (AP)—England has submitted its bid to stage either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup and is expecting 10 rivals.

Monday was the deadline to present bids to soccer’s international governing body. The English Football Association had said it would bid for 2018, but it added 2022 to strengthen its chances.

The FA expects opposition from the United States, Mexico, Australia, Indonesia, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Qatar and joint bids from Spain and Portugal and the Netherlands and Belgium.

The FIFA executive committee will vote on both hosts in 2010. The World Cup will be held in South Africa in 2010 and Brazil in 2014.
