News Analysis. Microsoft is smartly using April 30's Windows 7 Release Candidate release to MSDN and TechNet to prelaunch the new operating system.

There is just so much about Windows 7 marketing that reminds me of Windows 95. Perhaps most important is product evangelism, which if done right should be easier now than 14 years ago. Way back, enthusiasts gathered on AOL, bulletin boards, CompuServe, IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and Internet newsgroups. Today's communities are bigger and more consolidated than in the mid-1990s.

Not since Windows 95 have I seen Microsoft push marketing, end-user and partner outreach so aggressively so soon in the development process. Clearly, Microsoft is committed to making Windows 7 a success in all the ways Windows Vista couldn't be. For their marketing and partner value, some resources stand out, such as Web resources "Talking About Windows" and "Ready. Set. 7."

"Talking About Windows" is a new Website that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Windows 7 from the Microsoft engineers who helped build the product as well as showcasing real IT professionals talking candidly about their implementations and experiences in considering a more modern OS. This is done through a series of videos hosted on the Talking About Windows Website. "Ready. Set. 7." showcases Microsoft partner solutions, through videos, for Windows 7.

These and other larger marketing efforts are the air cover. Microsoft's more effective marketing will come from blogs, Twitter and social networking services. But that's a topic I don't have time for in this post. For now: Enthusiasts are the best marketers. Microsoft is right to go for them.

For Apple, the days of reckoning will be many, and they start today. Macs had a good market-share run in 2007 and 2008. Apple's "Get a Mac" ads effectively marketed its computers during a time when Microsoft didn't advertise Windows and there was so much grassroots countermarketing against Vista. Today, Microsoft has got effective marketing, the sizzling hot (my fingers are burning on the keyboard) Windows 7 and a community of grassroots supporters. I predict that Microsoft will own holiday 2009. Sorry, Apple.

But evangelism doesn't just happen. Nurturing is needed, and that's what Microsoft so effectively has done since Windows 7 Beta 1 was released on Jan. 9, almost five months ago. But the coordinated effort going on now is simply breathtaking for its scope—and, I predict, its effectiveness.

Apple will lose the PC market-share war, as the marching Windows 7 horde overruns the Mac camp. The question: Will Windows 7 be Microsoft's last campaign? Windows 7 represents the PC, which is computing's past. The mobile phone, where Apple has the increasingly popular App Store, is the future. But that's another topic I don't have time for today.

Running Windows 7 Release Candidate
None of this evangelism could be effective without a good product, and Windows 7 is just that. There has never been a better Windows operating system, and Windows 7 is sure to give Mac OS X a deserved kick in the butt. I ran Beta 1 since early January until Tuesday, April 28, when I moved to the release candidate. On April 6, I blogged about how, in part because of Windows 7, I switched to a Sony Vaio from a MacBook.

Here, I want to give some first impressions of the release candidate. I would write more, but I'm unusually rushed today. I'll explain why in the post that follows this one.

My initial reaction to the release candidate isn't as good as to the beta, although I'm more satisfied today than on Tuesday. My upgrade took about 4.5 hours. I wanted to upgrade from Windows Vista Business, which meant backing up my data, restoring the laptop to factory settings and upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate. A clean install would likely have taken about 30 minutes.

I installed Seven on a Sony Vaio VGN-Z590, with 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 13.1-inch LED backlit display with 1600-by-900 resolution, 256MB Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS graphics, 3GB of DDR3 (double data rate 3) memory, 320GB hard drive, DVD burner, fingerprint reader, Wi-Fi and Sprint 3G modem. The computer had a Windows Experience Index of 4.4 before and after the upgrade, but some component ratings changed, possibly because of hardware drivers. The 2.4GHz processor rating went up to 5.8 from 5.3, while memory dropped from 5.9 to 5.5.

The upgrade portion took about 2.5 hours, which is much longer than I expected. Suspected reason: updates. Early on in the process, the upgrade moved back to Windows Business Service Pack 1 to download and apply 45 updates. This surprised me. I suspect that a fully updated Vista installation would upgrade much faster.

I got some unexpected surprises when Windows 7 booted up for the first time. The system performance wasn't nearly as snappy as it had been running Beta 1. Maybe there was search indexing or other optimization features running. I will say that System Idle Process is much more active now than with the beta. What's going on with the kernel? Disk activity is increased, and the laptop's fan runs more frequently. I haven't looked at logs or done any real tests to see what's going on in the background. Perhaps some drivers need updating.

Performance is much better today than two days ago, but there are hesitations in the user interface that are Vista ghosts in the machine. The Beta 1 UI was snappy and applications switched smoothly. There are little annoyances that are just that, and they're decreasing. I would still recommend Windows 7 over Vista or even Mac OS X Leopard.

Windows 7 features some surprising desktop backgrounds that can only be described as charming, comic or colorful. The provided Aero Themes, desktop backgrounds and user control over translucency don't just allow for personalization. Other Windows versions have had garish personalization. Windows 7 creates a pleasant working environment, and the UI looks better the higher the screen resolution. The 13 new audio themes sound delightful. Microsoft made personalization one of the design priorities for the UI, but done tastefully for the first time in any Windows version.

Overall, my initial reaction to the RC is quite good. It's in some ways unfair to compare the release candidate with the beta. I'm as committed as ever to running Windows 7 as my primary operating system. Later today, my daughter will switch from a MacBook to Sony Vaio VGN-CR290. That laptop requires 64-bit Windows 7, which I don't yet have.

Windows XP Mode Security
This morning, eWEEK published my news analysis about Windows 7 RC availability. Yesterday, April 29, another story highlighted 10 things to expect from Windows 7.

The first story includes some detail about Windows XP Mode, which deserves further consideration. Yesterday I spoke with Jeff Price, senior director for the Windows ecosystem team, about the new feature, which for compatibility purposes provides a virtualized Windows XP environment for running older applications.

XPM comprises "both the underlying virtualization layer that has been updated for Windows 7 as well as a pre-built [version] of Windows XP SP3," Jeff said. He asserted that XPM "sets us up for a smoother migration experience for customers, because it allows them to carry forward compatibility with some older XP apps that provides a good transition experience as they're moving to Windows 7."

Microsoft is releasing Windows XP Mode concurrently alongside the release candidate but not as part of Windows 7. XPM will come as a beta, for now. In concept, once installed, XPM looks to the end user like any other application. "We will populate that to the Windows 7 Start Menu," Jeff said. "You as an end user might not know anything about virtualization or how this was set up for you by your IT pro. You'll just start Quicken 2004 from your Start Menu, and in the background we will start up the XP virtual machine and surface that application into a window."

I was really curious about security. Earlier in the week, eWEEK colleague Larry Seltzer raised legitimate questions about XPM and security protection. So I asked Jeff and got the answer I dreaded.

"We recommend that you secure it just as if you were running it on a physical PC -- meaning you should use anti-virus software and all the security practices that you would within the VM as you would on a Windows XP PC," Jeff responded. I asked if this would mean running two security software products, He replied: "Yes. Yes. Suspenders and a belt." Cute.

In concept, I think XPM is a great idea. Microsoft should have done something like this years ago. But I wonder how enterprises will deal with the licensing and management logistics.

Anyway, to close, this is a big day for Microsoft. From a marketing perspective, it's perhaps more important than Windows 7's launch.

Panasonic, NEC unveil 9 Linux phones

BARCELONA (Reuters) -

NEC and Panasonic will unveil on Monday nine new cell phone models running the open-source LiMo operating system, wireless Linux foundation LiMo said at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

The focus of the cell phone market has been shifting to software development since Google and Apple entered the mobile market in the past two years, with phone vendors and operators increasingly looking for open source alternatives like LiMo to cut costs.

The market for software platforms on cell phones is led by Nokia's Symbian operating system, but it has lost much ground over the last year to Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.

Computer operating system Linux has had little success in cell phones thus far, but its role is increasing with the LiMo platform, and Google is using Linux for its Android platform.

Linux is the most popular type of free or so-called open source computer operating system, which is available to the public to be used, revised and shared.

Linux suppliers earn money selling improvements and technical services, and Linux competes directly with Microsoft, which charges for its Windows software and opposes freely sharing its code.

LiMo also said five firms -- Aromasoft, CasioHitachi Mobile Communications, Marvell, Opera Software and Swisscom -- had joined the not-for-profit foundation, increasing its membership to 55.

Google's Android camp has so far announced 47 members.

However, LiMo has been missing support from the largest cell phone vendors -- so far only NEC, Panasonic and Motorola have unveiled phones using its software.

The world's second- and third-largest cell phone vendors, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, are members of LiMo, but have not unveiled commercial models.

LG Electronics will be providing technology previews of its sleek touchscreen handset at the trade show, LiMo said, while Samsung will show plans of two devices.

LiMo hopes to benefit from its focus on giving greater say over software development to telecoms operators.

Last week its key members -- Vodafone, Orange, Japan's NTT DoCoMo, Korea's SK Telecom, U.S. operator Verizon Wireless and Telefonica -- pledged to introduce LiMo phones in 2009.

Washington, D.C. will be 1st to get free mobile TV

Washington will be the first U.S. city to get free digital TV broadcasts for mobile devices like cell phones, laptop computers and in-car entertainment systems, broadcasters were set to announce Monday.

Broadcasts using new "mobile DTV" technology are expected to begin in late summer from five stations: local affiliates of CBS, NBC, PBS and Ion and one independent station owned by Fox.

The initial broadcasts will be identical to those beamed to TV sets, including the advertising.

It's unclear what devices might be available with the special receivers needed for the new signals. Cell phones are main candidates for the technology, but the wireless carriers have shown no enthusiasm, and the largest two have their own TV services, which require subscriptions.

However, Dell Inc. will be showing a prototype of a small laptop with a built-in mobile DTV receiver at the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Las Vegas this week. The computer maker joins cell phone makers LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. in supporting the technology. Kenwood Corp. is developing car-based receivers.

The companies backing the technology in the so-called Open Mobile Video Coalition said Washington was chosen as a test market because the city is full of tech-savvy viewers who pay attention to local news. Attention from politicians and regulators probably doesn't hurt either — the coalition has earlier pointed to the usefulness of free mobile TV broadcasts in case of emergencies and disasters like hurricanes.

Broadcasters plan to quickly start broadcasts in more than two dozen other cities by the end of the year, covering 39 percent of U.S. households. Among the target cities are New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston and Atlanta.

AP sources: Sun deal cloudy after IBM pulls offer

BOSTON – IBM Corp. withdrew its offer to buy Sun Microsystems Inc. for about $7 billion this weekend, clouding the prospects for a deal that would have shaken up the computing industry, The Associated Press has learned.

Talks were in their final stages in recent days, but IBM took its offer off the table after Sun terminated IBM's status as its exclusive negotiating partner, according to two people familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the negotiations.

One of these people said the two sides were still meeting Sunday.

Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM was believed to be offering about $9.50 per share for Sun. That was about double the price the Santa Clara, Calif.-based server and software maker was trading for when the discussions leaked last month. Sun shares closed Friday at $8.49.

Sun was one of the darlings of the dot-com era but spent most of this decade struggling to find its place, wrestling with huge losses and thousands of layoffs. As a result many analysts were not surprised Sun and IBM were in talks.

Sun still owns key server and business-software technologies that might fit in IBM's product and services lineup. But a deal likely would face antitrust questions, and in addition to haggling over price, Sun has been pushing IBM to make certain commitments to seeing the deal through such scrutiny.

On new cell phones, QWERTY eases out 1-2-3

LAS VEGAS - Goodbye, numeric cell phone keypads. You're going the way of the rotary dial. Touch screens and QWERTY keyboards will take over from here, thank you.

At North America's largest cell phone trade show, running this week in Las Vegas, there were few new phones for the U.S. market that had a numerical keypad instead of an alphabetic keyboard. Touch screens also were out in force.

These changes are a recognition of the popularity of text messaging and wireless Internet use. Industry organization CTIA Wireless, which hosts the show, said U.S. subscribers sent 1 trillion text messages last year, three times the 2007 volume. Meanwhile, the same people used 2.2 trillion minutes of voice calls, an increase of less than 5 percent.

This shift in how people use their mobile devices has overturned cell phone design. According to NPD Group, 31 percent of phones sold in U.S. stores in the fourth quarter of 2008 had full-alphabet keyboards, up from 5 percent two years earlier.

AT&T Inc., the second-largest wireless carrier after Verizon Wireless, introduced six phones this week, all of which had either a touch screen, a typewriter-style keyboard, or both. At the booth of Samsung Electronics Co., the largest seller of phones in the U.S., there were no new keypad phones.

Motorola Inc., the largest domestic maker of phones, was showing off one low-end handset with a keypad. It went on sale through AT&T two weeks ago. But Motorola's big news was a model called the Evoke, which has a touch screen. It's designed for the U.S. market, though it doesn't have a carrier distribution agreement yet.

LG Electronics Inc. displayed a new handset, the GD900, that seemed to both emphasize a numeric keypad and make it vanish. A pad slides out from the GD900's body, but it's made of transparent plastic, so you can see right through it. You don't need to use keypad at all, since the screen is touch-sensitive. Other new LG phones were also dominated by touch screens.

Even at the low end of the market, keyboards for text messaging are becoming common and affordable. AT&T expects to sell two of the keyboard-equipped phones it introduced, the Samsung Magnet and LG Neon, for about $20 to $30.

Old-fashioned numeric keypads still will have a prominent place — but largely overseas. In a twist of market dynamics, the demand for QWERTY phones is mainly a North American phenomenon, said Ross Rubin, an analyst at NPD.

Although touch screens are gaining in popularity all over the world, people in other countries got into text messaging much earlier and "became acclimated to texting with a keypad," Rubin said. Meanwhile, the U.S. market has been influenced by high-end smart phones like the Treo and the BlackBerry that pioneered small versions of typewriter-style keyboards.

As a result, numeric keypads were still dominant at the CTIA booth of Nokia Corp., the world's largest maker of cell phones, which has a relatively minor presence in the U.S. The same was the case at the booth of Japanese-Swedish manufacturer Sony Ericsson.

Other notable wireless devices at the show (prices are with two-year contracts):

• The Samsung Impression is the first phone on the U.S. market with a screen that uses organic light-emitting diodes rather than liquid crystals. Since OLEDs emit their own light, rather than filtering a fluorescent backlight like LCDs, they can save on battery life and provide better image quality. The Impression has a 3.2-inch touch screen capable of showing very saturated colors and dark blacks, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. AT&T will sell the phone for $200 starting Tuesday. OLEDs have shown up before in camera displays, and Sony sells a small, expensive OLED TV.

• AT&T will sell the Nokia E71x, which is billed as the thinnest smart phone in the country, less than half an inch thick. The layout is similar to that of a BlackBerry or BlackJack, and includes a keyboard. Nokia has had a hard time penetrating the U.S. smart phone market, and previous, similar Nokia models sold by AT&T haven't made much of dent on the dominant market share of Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry. Despite being so thin, the E71x has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus. The phone will cost $100. AT&T has no firm launch date.

Sprint Nextel Corp. trotted out the Samsung Instinct s30, a follow-up to the first Instinct, which it introduced last year as a touch-screen competitor to the iPhone. The s30 has a thinner, more rounded body and includes a more fully featured Web browser. The s30 will be available April 19 for $130.

• Samsung is making a Web tablet for Clearwire Corp.'s wireless broadband network, which uses a technology known as WiMax. There are laptops and modems for the network, which is live in Portland, Ore., and Baltimore, but there hasn't been a standalone portable device for Clearwire since Nokia discontinued its WiMax tablet in January. Samsung's Mondi will go on sale in the next three months. No price was announced. It doesn't work as a phone, but it could run teleconferencing applications like Skype. The underlying software is Windows Mobile. Naturally, the Mondi has a keyboard and a touch screen, with a 4.3-inch diagonal.

Last-minute Conficker survival guide

Tomorrow -- April 1 -- is D-Day for Conficker, as whatever nasty payload it's packing is currently set to activate. What happens come midnight is a mystery: Will it turn the millions of infected computers into spam-sending zombie robots? Or will it start capturing everything you type -- passwords, credit card numbers, etc. -- and send that information back to its masters?

No one knows, but we'll probably find out soon.

Or not. As Slate notes, Conficker is scheduled to go "live" on April 1, but whoever's controlling it could choose not to wreak havoc but instead do absolutely nothing, waiting for a time when there's less heat. They can do this because the way Conficker is designed is extremely clever: Rather than containing a list of specific, static instructions, Conficker reaches out to the web to receive updated marching orders via a huge list of websites it creates. Conficker.C -- the latest bad boy -- will start checking 50,000 different semi-randomly-generated sites a day looking for instructions, so there's no way to shut down all of them. If just one of those sites goes live with legitimate instructions, Conficker keeps on trucking.

Conficker's a nasty little worm that takes serious efforts to bypass your security defenses, but you aren't without some tools in your arsenal to protect yourself.

Your first step should be the tools you already have: Windows Update, to make sure your computer is fully patched, and your current antivirus software, to make sure anything that slips through the cracks is caught.

But if Conficker's already on your machine, it may bypass certain subsystems and updating Windows and your antivirus at this point may not work. If you are worried about anything being amiss -- try booting into Safe Mode, which Conficker prevents, to check -- you should run a specialized tool to get rid of Conficker.

Microsoft offers a web-based scanner (note that some users have reported it crashed their machines; I had no trouble with it), so you might try one of these downloadable options instead: Symantec's Conficker (aka Downadup) tool, Trend Micro's Cleanup Engine, or Malwarebytes. Conficker may prevent your machine from accessing any of these websites, so you may have to download these tools from a known non-infected computer if you need them. Follow the instructions given on each site to run them successfully. (Also note: None of these tools should harm your computer if you don't have Conficker.)

As a final safety note, all users -- whether they're worried about an infection or know for sure they're clean -- are also wise to make a full data backup today.

What won't work? Turning your PC off tonight and back on on April 2 will not protect you from the worm (sorry to the dozens of people who wrote me asking if this would do the trick). Temporarily disconnecting your computer from the web won't help if the malware is already on your machine -- it will simply activate once you connect again. Changing the date on your PC will likely have no helpful effect, either. And yes, Macs are immune this time out. Follow the above instructions to detect and remove the worm.

Leaving computers on overnight = $2.8 billion a year

Admittedly I don't think much about it at all. I leave my laptop running overnight because I know it'll take five minutes or more to get things going in the morning -- not just booting up, but launching the various apps I start the day with, downloading my overnight email, filtering out the spam, and otherwise "getting settled."

But all the power wasted while computers are sitting idle overnight adds up, and one study has finally tried to measure it. The tally: An estimated $2.8 billion wasted on excess energy costs each year in the U.S. alone.

On a CO2 basis, that's 20 million tons of carbon dioxide, about the amount produced by 4 million cars on the road.

But big numbers like that become almost meaningless in an era of trillion-dollar bailouts, so to put the wasted energy in perspective, the study provides the data in terms you can better understand: If you run a company with 1,000 PCs left on overnight, you can save about $28,000 a year if they are turned off after hours. That's not chump change.

Of course, it's also a fact that your PC will function better if you restart it regularly, and nightly shutdowns can help you avoid having to suddenly reboot in the middle of the day when you'd otherwise be productive. So even though this little laptop, by my math, eats up only about a quarter's worth of power overnight, maybe it's a smart idea -- and ultimately a time-saver, too -- to shut it down after hours after all.

Explorer 8: Bugs, Crashes, Glitches, Oh My!

Microsoft's new browser is causing big problems for some computer users.



Early adopters of Internet Explorer 8 say the new Microsoft browser is causing a range of unexpected issues, including missing Web content, system crashes, and Internet tools that don't function properly.

"I have just installed IE8 and still the search option doesn't work. All I get is a blank line with no search box so what and where is the problem?" a visitor to Microsoft's Explorer feedback page who identified himself as Aviramoff wrote on Thursday -- the same day Microsoft formally released the product.

Aviramoff was among dozens of posters to report significant IE8 glitches.

Another user, Bob, wrote that certain Web sites weren't displaying properly in Explorer 8, including that of online greeting card purveyor American Greetings. "After downloading IE8 I cannot print any card from American Greetings. The message I get is, 'An error occurred during the operation,'" complained Bob.

Microsoft has warned Web publishers that Explorer 8's default support for some new Internet standards may cause problems with their sites. Explorer 8 includes a tool called Compatibility View that lets users view sites built for previous editions of the browser.

But some IE8 adopters reported that even pages built with Microsoft's own Web publishing software, Microsoft Publisher, failed to render properly in the new browser. "I created my company's Web site using the MS Publisher 2007 template. After upgrading IE7 to IE8 my menu tabs and many important images no longer show," wrote a user named Phil Wheeler.

The news wasn't all bad for Microsoft, as some IE8 users said they were more than happy with the product.

"In my first 30 minutes of using IE8 on my Vista Business Edition I am very pleased," wrote Lambert. "The browser opens in a quarter of the time that it did in IE7. Normally I would not bother posting such an effusive comment, but IE8 is that good," Lambert gushed.

Microsoft needs Explorer 8 to be a hit, as the company's Internet Explorer franchise has been losing ground to competitors. Explorer's share of the market has fallen from 75% to 67% in just the past 12 months, according to market watcher Net Applications, while competitors such as Apple's Safari and Mozilla's Firefox have gained ground.

Most Affordable 2009 Vehicles

David Wurster could hardly believe it recently when he filled the tank of his Ford Focus ZX5 with gas that cost just over $1.60 a gallon. It was a far cry from the $3.60 he paid last summer. But Wurster's not letting himself get used to the new low.

"It was great," says Wurster, who leads product development and industry analysis for the auto consulting firm Vincentric, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. "I think in the short term it's going to go down more, in fact. But this is the short term. Don't get comfortable. We're going to see $3 again."

It's the unease of impending high gas prices and the shaky economy that necessitates consumers arming themselves with as much information as they can before heading out to buy a new car, experts say. And the research can pay off, since the true costs of owning a car are realized only after you drive off the lot, not when you hand over a cashier's check for the car itself.

Take, for example, the $22,990 Volkswagen GTI and the $23,565 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Though comparable in price, the two-door GTI's fuel efficiency (21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway) and low maintenance costs help make it the most affordable compact premium model.

The Wrangler Unlimited SUV, however, fares worse when it comes to affordability over five years. Its lower gas mileage (15 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway) and the higher cost of insuring a mid-size SUV make it more expensive to drive than a smaller car of comparable sticker price.

Dan Jarvis, a Ford spokesman, says more drivers, especially young ones, are making the "very wise" decision to do this kind of research online before talking to a dealer.

"They are looking at the overall cost over the life of the vehicle," he says. "And the millennials, as we call them, are also doing the research for their mothers and fathers. So they know about insurance costs and maintenance and fuel costs. They're looking for that value."

Behind The Numbers

To identify 2009's most affordable vehicle in each major market segment, we used Vincentric data to add to the base price the five-year totals for fuel costs, maintenance and repairs, as well as the average national insurance rates in each segment. To find the gas expense, we assumed an annual rate of 15,000 miles driven per vehicle at a price of $3.25 per gallon (the 2008 year-to-date average). We then evaluated affordability based on the percentage of each vehicle's five-year costs compared with its grand total costs, including base price.

Experts say the key to choosing a truly affordable vehicle is to know what your needs are--and stick to them. Nowhere is this more important than when considering buying an SUV. The Kia Sportage, for example, is the most affordable SUV overall on our list. The base model costs only $16,695, but still offers luxury-associated amenities such as keyless entry, alloy wheels and full power accessories. But it leaves out the heft, which helps keep its gas costs low, getting a combined 22 mpg.

Most SUV owners don't really need the extra towing capacity of a larger, heavier SUV for making weekend trips to Wal-Mart, says Jason Fogelson, a Los Angeles-based auto writer who maintains the About.com guide to SUVs. Consumers should buy the smallest, most fuel-efficient vehicle they can get away with, he says--the Kia fits the bill for those who truly need an SUV. And despite recent generous deals on full-sized SUVs, buyers should remember that they'll usually save more money on their initial purchase and on gas later on if they choose the smaller SUV or engine.

"Plan for expensive gas, and plan for fuel economy," Fogelson says. "And take a second look at that V8 and make sure you really need it before you buy it. You're going to pay for it in the very near future in my opinion."

Scaled-Down Luxury, Bigger Savings

Of course, smaller vehicles tend to cost less to own over the years than crossovers and SUVs. The Nissan Versa, which topped the compact entry-level segment, costs roughly $26,000 to own over five years, while the Chrysler 300, the large premium sedan winner, costs almost twice that much. But opting for the smaller car doesn't mean settling for chintzy workmanship and a bare interior.

The compact-car market consists in large part of buyers under the age of 35--most of who want wireless connectivity, good fuel economy and a decent sound system, all at an affordable price, Ford's Jarvis says. In short, they appreciate--demand, in fact--luxuries in their small, fuel-sippers.

"People want small, they want fuel economy, but they want the creature comforts they see in other cars," Jarvis says. "They want the leather seats. They want heated seats. They want [the voice-activated communication system] Sync."

Nissan's $9,990 Versa option packages include amenities like fog lights, a power moon roof, Bluetooth capability, leather-clad detailing and premium speakers--all luxury components previously unheard of in compact, entry-level cars.

The Bottom Line

So what really matters when searching for an affordable vehicle? Keep in mind smaller, cheaper cars tend to include less equipment, which reduces weight and improves fuel efficiency. They also tend to have lower maintenance fees.

But if a small car doesn't suit your lifestyle, do your homework on long-term costs, since certain segments, like luxury sedans, are crowded and all the cars are not made alike.

Models like the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV and Ford Fusion mid-size, for example, are both in crowded segments, but each is the most affordable in their class because they have lower fuel costs and lower long-term maintenance costs than their competitors.

Consumers should also shop around for insurance, getting multiple quotes on several different vehicles. Most insurance providers use their own formulas to determine how to price their coverage, so the cost is a variable that can fluctuate even within a given region.

Jarvis took all that into account before he bought his 2009 Ford Focus, which cost him $14,995.

"If I'm on the highway cruising along at 60 miles an hour, I'm getting 42 miles a gallon," he says. "It's amazing. And that was with my wife in the car and with a whole bunch of groceries!"

Consumers who do their homework, as Jarvis and Wurster did, will feel much less of a pinch should gas prices spike again in the summer ahead.

Pentagon Seeks Fleet of Massive DARPA Spy Blimps

The Pentagon has announced intentions to launch an entire fleet of giant 450-foot-long airships which will act as a massive airborne radar system providing perpetual surveillance of vehicles, planes and people on the ground.

The Pentagon said Thursday that it intends to spend $400 million to develop a giant dirigible that will operate on hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels, floating 65,000 feet above the Earth for 10 years, reports the LA Times.

The airships will be around twenty times larger than the Goodyear Blimp, giving ground operators the capability of monitoring an area hundreds of miles in diameter at a time with surveillance equipment, such as high-resolution cameras, in addition to the football-field-sized radar antenna.

Although very large, the airships will be invisible to both the naked eye and ground radar because of their distance from the earth, hovering around 12 miles above the ground.

The craft would also operate beyond the range of any hand-held missile, many surface-to-air missiles and most fighter planes.

The airship, named ISIS (Integrated Sensor Is the Structure), no doubt after the Ancient Egyptian goddess, is being developed under an agreement between the Air Force and DARPA, the Pentagon’s semi-secret research arm.

Werner J.A. Dahm, chief scientist for the Air Force describes the airship as “constant surveillance, uninterrupted”.

“When you only have a short-time view — whether it is a few hours or a few days — that is not enough to put the picture together.” Dahm said.

The Pentagon has described the project as a tool to be used over urban battlegrounds abroad. But, like DARPA’S” Combat Zones That See” project, there’s no reason ISIS couldn’t float over major cities such as New York or Chicago without anyone knowing.

A similar program known as WALRUS was effectively killed off by Congress in 2006. However, the ISIS program has been floating around (pun intended) since 2004.

“We will apply this technology to track people emerging from buildings of interest and follow them as they move to new locations,” announced DARPA’s Paul Benda at a conference in March 2004. “Imagine the impact it will have if ISIS tracks the movement of individuals for months. Hidden webs of connections between people and facilities will be revealed.”

In 2006, reports regarding the project resurfaced as DARPA courted defense contractors Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to develop the airships.

The Air Force has signed an agreement with DARPA to develop a demonstration dirigible by 2014.

Synthetic life is a multi-disciplinary field in research devoted to the creation of lifelike structures in fields like computational, biochemical, mechanical, or combinations of the three. Scientists working in the field of artificial life anticipate gaining general insights about self-organizing systems, applying their knowledge in technology development.

Progress of Research in Synthetic Life

The historical and theoretical bases of this field are diverse. These include:
  • Early attempts to mimic the behavior of animals and humans by the invention of self powered mechanical devices in the sixteenth century
  • Cybernetics, the study of informational control within machines and animals
  • Computer science as a theory and the idea of it being equivalent to providing logic for mechanical systems performance
  • John von Neumann’s so-called self replicating cellular automata
  • Computer science along with computational architectures, as a set of technical practices
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Philosophy and system science notions of hierarchies
  • Robotics
  • Non-linear science, such as the physics of complex systems and chaos theory and theoretical biology
  • Evolution theories within biology
Despite the long history of the subject, the first international conference for synthetic life was not held until 1987. This conference was organized by C.G. Langton, a computer scientist, who presented a future synthesis of the field’s various roots and chalked out the important elements of the research program. During the first five and a half years after 1987, the research went through an exploratory phase, in which, it was not always clear by what criteria, one could evaluate individual contributions. Later the field subdivided into clusters of research areas, each with it own representations, questions, and works in progress. As in A.I. research, some areas of artificial life research are mainly motivated by developing more efficient technological applications through the use of biologic inspired principles. Examples of these applications include: modeling architectures to simulate complex adaptive systems, like in traffic planning, as well as biologically inspired immune systems for computers. Other domains of research are driven by theoretical queries about the nature of emergence, the origin of life, and forms of self-organization, complexity and growth.

Composition of Synthetic Life Forms

Synthetic life might consist of three domains of development labeled as software, hardware, or wetware, or a combination of these three depending on the type of life required by researchers. Individual synthetic life is described in each of the three domains.

Software:

The field of computer science represents the idea that life is characterized by forms of organization, rather than by its constituent material. Thus, "life", as we call it, may be comprehended in some form other than carbon chemistry, such as in a computer’s central processing unit, or in a network of computers, or as computer viruses spreading through a network. Researchers can build a virtual ecosystem and let small component programs represent species of prey and predator organisms competing or cooperating for requisite resources like food. The difference between this type of artificial life and ordinary scientific use of computer simulations is that, with the latter, the scientist attempts to create a replica of a real biological system (like fish populations of the Pacific Ocean) and to base the description upon real data and established biologic principles. The scientist tries to authenticate the model to make sure that it represents certain aspects of the real world.

On the other hand, an artificial life model represents biology in a more conceptual sense; it is not a genuine system, but a virtual one, constructed for a specific reason, such as the investigation of the efficiency of an evolutionary progression of a Lamarckian type (based upon the inheritance of acquired characters) as opposed to Darwinian evolution (based upon natural selection among randomly produced variants). Such a biologic system is assumed to not exist anywhere in the real universe due to its idealistic approach.

As Langton emphasized, artificial life investigates "the biology of the possible" to compensate for the inadequacies of traditional biology, which is bound to investigate how life actually evolved on our planet, but cannot pinpoint the borders between the possible and impossible forms of biologic processes. For example, a synthetic life system might be used to determine whether it is only by historical accident that organisms on our planet have an universal genetic code, or whether the code could have been dissimilar. There has been a debate as to if virtual life in the computer world is a model on a high level of abstraction, or is it a form of genuine life as suggested by some artificial life researchers. If it really is possible to create genuine life from scratch, the ethical concerns related to this research intensify: In what sense can the human community be said to be in charge of creating life by artificial means?

Hardware:

Hardware in artificial life usually refers to small animal-like robots called animats, that scientists build and use to study the design principles of autonomous systems. The functionality of an agent (a collection of modules, each with its own field of interaction and competence) is a property of the interaction of the system with its surrounding environment. The modules operate semi-autonomously and are solely responsible for the sensing, modeling, computing or reasoning, and motor control that is imperative to obtain their specific competence. The direct coupling of perception to action is facilitated by the use of reasoning logistics, which operate on representations that are relatively close to the information of the sensors. This method states that to build a system that is intelligent, it is necessary to have its representations in the physical world.

Representations do not need to be explicit, but must be situated and personified. The robots are thus situated in a universe; and do not deal with abstract descriptions, but with the environment that directly affects the behavior of the system. Additionally, the robots have "bodies" and experience the world directly, so that their actions have an instant feedback upon the robot’s own sensations. Computer-simulated robots, on the other hand, may be placed in a virtual environment, but they don’t have "bodies". Hardware related artificial life has many industrial and military technological applications.

Wetware:

Wetware synthetic life comes closest to real biology. The scientific approach involves conducting experiments with populations of organic macromolecules which are combined in a liquid medium, in order to study their self organizing properties. An example is the artificial evolution of ribonucleic acid molecules (RNA) with specific properties. The research into RNA and similar scientific programs, however, often take place in the areas of biochemistry, molecular biology and combinatorial chemistry as well as other carbon-based chemistries. Such wetware research does not necessarily have a commitment to a singular idea, often assumed by scientists in software artificial life, that life is a composed of medium-independent forms of existence.

Thus, wetware synthetic life is concerned with the investigation of self-organizing principles in "real chemistries." In theoretical biology, autopoiesis is a term for a specific kind of self-preservation produced by networks of components producing their own components and the boundaries of the network in processes that resemble organizationally closed loops. Such systems have been artificially created by chemical components not present in living organisms.

Questions of theology are hardly discussed in synthetic life research, but the very idea of a human researcher "playing God" by creating his own world for doing experiments (in the computer or the test tube) with the laws of growth, development, and evolution demonstrate that some motivation for scientific research may still be connected to religious similes.

‘Windows has been Shut Down': Stop Error in Windows Vista

Windows Vista may encounter certain issues related with software and hardware configuration in the operating system and BIOS respectively. When we power up the system it sends signals connected to all the hardware (known as IRQs - Interrupt Requests) during the POST (Power on Self Test) procedure. After the system control gets transferred to the operating system and in case it figures out problem, the operating system tries to repair it. However, if it is not able to repair the problem, in case of major crash Windows Vista halts or restarts the system (or shuts it down in cases like incompatible specification) and usually shows an error message related to the problem as a blue screen as:

"Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". In the above case, we can go for two possible solutions. The first one will be to restore the BIOS defaults and uninstall any new hardware or driver installed. In most cases, it should help (we should know how to go to the BIOS, generally by pressing the Delete or F2 keys) to boot our Windows system. If the problem is due to some other problem and the system still shows the above error or a different problem occurs, we need to determine the nature of that problem. If the hardware is fine, we should go for Windows Vista Startup repair using the System Recovery options menu. In order to get to the System Recovery options screen, we need to boot the system using the Windows Vista DVD. We need to follow corrective measures to avoid data loss as if we don’t have an existing updated backup, we will be left with no choice other than to go for Data Recovery Tools.

Users report different scenarios in these cases. When in one situation, we can start up the system, in other cases system may not start at all.

If system can be started, Windows Vista includes solution options. We can use Problem Reports and Solutions through Control Panel. Satellite Imaging Equipment:

NASA Satellite images are the result of application of a variety of instruments. Each instrument or radiometer has its own unique performance. While some measure temperature and humidity vertically, like the spectrometers and interferometers; others act as remote sensing instruments that emit radiation from a transmitting device, like the radar. The measurements by the in-built metric system help the weather bureaus on the planet to analyze and assess rainfall, surface wind speed and other atmosphere related parameters. The information transmitted by the NASA satellites is numerical in nature and the images need further analyzing for accurate forecasting.

Types of NASA Satellite Images:

NASA satellite images are of two basic types – visible satellite images and infrared images. Visible satellite images are black and white images through aerial photography, provided by satellite signals. While clouds usually appear white, land and water surfaces appear black. These images enable access to reflected solar energy or radiation, since visible imagery is produced on account of reflected sunlight and is available only during the day. Visible imagery has a higher resolution that offers details on smaller features. The infrared channel is activated in the presence of heat. The images are the result of the deflection of heat emitted by the earth’s surface, clouds, and the atmosphere and the re-emitting of the same. The infrared channel works on the principles of re-emitted radiation.

NASA satellite images are available 24 hours a day. The colorized imagery highlight land and water features and display temperature data to estimate cloud heights. The images act as observational platforms to enhance human life on the planet.

Google Will Close Business Radio

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Google Inc., owner of the most popular search engine in the world, announced plans to close the business radio ads that are three years and reduce the 40 workers, with the reason it does not provide investment results that enough.

Companies, which make the expansion to the market in 2006 with the purchase DMarc Broadcasting Inc., are seeking buyers for a software program to set up ads on the radio. Google will discontinue the sale of radio ads on 31 May and will focus on streaming audio, according to any posts in the blog today.

Step shows that the failure of Google to strengthen its dominance in Internet advertising to offline media. Months ago the company wanted to close the business that sells ad space in newspapers.

Google spent U.S. $ 102 million in cash for DMarc and agree to pay U.S. $ 1.14 billion in installments depending on performance.

"They try to penetrate the media that really old and institutions," said Sameet Sinha, an analyst from JMP Securities LLC in San Francisco.

The growth of radio advertising has been stopped in the last three years. Ad revenue rose 0.4 percent in 2006, and down 2.3 percent in 2007, according to Mark Fratrik, an analyst from Bia Financial Network in Chantilly, Virginia.

Meanwhile, preliminary figures show a decline 8.5 percent in 2008, and Fratrik reduction estimate of 10 percent this year.

Shares of Google, based in Mountain View, California, rose U.S. $ 5.01 or 1.4 percent, to U.S. $ 363.05 in New York at 4 pm in Nasdaq Stock Market, Thursday.

Culture and Student Life at IIT

The best thing about IITs across the country is that they provide on-campus residential accommodation to students, researchers, and faculty. Students reside in hostels that are uniquely named, all throughout their graduation. Each hostel has a common room that provides facilities like indoor games and a television. Students can gather in the common room to chat with each other or to keep themselves updated about the current events by watching television and reading newspapers. In addition, it is imperative that every IIT student opts of National Cadet Corps (NCC0, National Service Scheme (NSS), or National Sports Organization (NSO) during their first year. Surely, this is an exciting and innovative concept. This helps in the overall growth of the student. IITs across the country have huge grounds that witness different sports like football, hockey, cricket, lawn tennis, badminton, and athletics. In addition, each IIT has nice and big swimming pools for water activities.

All the IITs are known for their technical and cultural events. The different technical events in IITs across the country include Cognizance held at IIT Roorkee, Shaastra held at IIT Chennai, Techkriti held at IIT Kanpur, Kshitij held at IIT Kharagpur, Techfest held at IIT Bombay, Tryst held at IIT Delhi, and Techniche held at IIT Guwahati. These technical fests last for around three to four days and are mostly held between February and March. Of the various technical events held across different IITs Shaastra has earned a name for being the first ever event, managed by students, that incorporates a formal Quality Management System. Kshitij, on the other hand, is known for the maximum number of participants and huge sums of money offered as prizes.

IITs all over the country also host famous cultural events. The different cultural events across different IITs include Thomso held at IIT Roorkee, Mood Indigo held at IIT Mumbai, Spring Fest held at IIT Kharagpur, Saarang held at IIT Chennai, Antaragni held at IIT Kanpur, Alcheringa held at IIT Guwahati, and Rendezvous held at IIT Delhi. The annual fest too lasts for three to four days and hosts a whole lot of entertaining and engaging events.

Added to the technical and cultural events, IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur host some really different and unique festivals. Performing Arts Festival is a unique feature of IIT Mumbai and includes activities and events such as drama, music, fine arts, literature, dance, and debates. All these activities are held at the Open Air Theater in IIT Mumbai’s main campus. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur hosts the unique festival called Illumination. Celebrated on the eve of Diwali, the festival of lights, the highlight of this festival is the competition between different halls for the prize. As a part of the competition, halls plant vertical columns of bamboo (chatais) on which they place earthen lamps (diyas) that eventually form outlines of people or things that depict a place or an event.

IITs also hold inter-IIT sports called the Annual Inter-IIT Sports Meet. The prestigious award is a running shield that is presented to the IIT that wins the meet. The winning IIT is decided, based on the total number of points that each IIT earns for all the events. The events held at the Annual Inter-IIT Sports Meet include athletics, badminton, cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, hockey, squash, swimming, lawn tennis, weightlifting, and table tennis.

This culture and student life across different IITs is really interesting and amazing to experience. This is surely one of the reasons why individuals want to be a part of the brand name, IIT.
